Gentlest ascent dynamics for calculating first excited state and exploring energy landscape of Kohn-Sham density functionals.

چکیده
We develop the gentlest ascent dynamics for Kohn-Sham density functional theory to search for the index-1 saddle points on the energy landscape of the Kohn-Sham density functionals. These stationary solutions correspond to excited states in the ground state functionals. As shown by various examples, the first excited states of many chemical systems are given by these index-1 saddle points. Our novel approach provides an alternative, more robust way to obtain these excited states, compared with the widely used ΔSCF approach. The method can be easily generalized to target higher index saddle points. Our results also reveal the physical interest and relevance of studying the Kohn-Sham energy landscape.

Calculating excited state properties using Kohn-Sham density functional theory.
The accuracy of excited states calculated with Kohn-Sham density functional theory using the maximum overlap method has been assessed for the calculation of adiabatic excitation energies, excited state structures, and excited state harmonic and anharmonic vibrational frequencies for open-shell singlet excited states. The computed Kohn-Sham adiabatic excitation energies are improved significantl...
متن کاملTime-dependent density functional theory beyond Kohn-Sham Slater determinants.
When running time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations for real-time simulations of non-equilibrium dynamics, the user has a choice of initial Kohn-Sham state, and typically a Slater determinant is used. We explore the impact of this choice on the exchange-correlation potential when the physical system begins in a 50 : 50 superposition of the ground and first-excited state o...
متن کاملFirst-order nonadiabatic couplings from time-dependent hybrid density functional response theory: Consistent formalism, implementation, and performance.
First-order nonadiabatic coupling matrix elements (NACMEs) are key for phenomena such as nonradiative transitions and excited-state decay, yet a consistent and practical first principles treatment has been elusive for molecules with more than a few heavy atoms. Here we present theory, implementation using Gaussian basis sets, and benchmarks of first-order NACMEs between ground and excited state...
متن کاملExcitation energies and Stokes shifts from a restricted open-shell Kohn-Sham approach.
Restricted open-shell Kohn-Sham (ROKS) theory provides a powerful computational tool for calculating singlet excited state energies and dynamics. However, the possibility of multiple solutions to the ROKS equations - with the associated difficulty of automatically selecting the physically meaningful solution - limits its usefulness for intensive applications such as long-time Born-Oppenheimer m...
متن کاملself-consistent field method to obtain potential energy surfaces of excited molecules on surfaces
We present a modification of the self-consistent field SCF method of calculating energies of excited states in order to make it applicable to resonance calculations of molecules adsorbed on metal surfaces, where the molecular orbitals are highly hybridized. The SCF approximation is a density-functional method closely resembling standard density-functional theory DFT , the only difference being ...
